Freshwater Challenge Summary
15 paddlers + 1 groupie attended the Outrigger race with everyone
of them claiming a slice of Barry yard for camping. Pat initiated the Portable
toilet much to the chagrin of Chris would thought an extra fee should be
collected from Pat. Every year the Calgary campers are very popular with the
earwigs that frequent Barry yard.
On Saturday 11 paddlers entered the 10 km small boats races and the Calgary
paddlers came up with 10 medals. A big attaboy goes to Gerald for his first OC1
race which included 3 huli’s, matching the number of times he has paddled an
OC1. Vernon had a spectacular table of snacks for post race munchies and Cokes
which just happened to find themselves with a little bit of dark rum in them.
Not sure how it happened but we had a pretty happy relaxed group after the
races.
Sunday morning the crew of Gerald, Alison, Scott, Mike, Barney and Bill took on
the 27 km short course without changes. The iron crew led from the start and
held the lead all the way to the corner where the short course turned back and
the women’s change race carried on. The iron crew although only exhibition
finished first in a time of 2:22:07. Certain members of the team think we could
have gone faster had Bill not been singing to Alison during the race.
Sunday afternoon brought the mixed crew of Kip, Karen P, Karen HK, Beth,
Candace, Chris, Martin, Pat and Peter to take on 4 other mixed teams and 3 mens
teams. The changes looked sharp from the chase boat and the team finished the 45
km course 5th overall in a time of 4:12:22. Although finishing 2rd place in the
mixed category behind (Jon A’s dreaded) Lotus mixed team the crew held off a
very determined Penticton men’s crew. Special recognition should be given to
Candace for learning how to tread water on the internet a couple of night before
jumping out of the boat in the middle of Lake Okanagan.
